Who Needs a TxDOT Number?

Texas requires USDOT number in order to obtain TxDOT Number. A TxDOT Number is required for businesses or individuals operating certain types of commercial vehicles in intrastate commerce (within Texas). You need a TxDMV Number if any of the following apply:

  • You operate a commercial motor vehicle (or a combination of vehicles) with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating exceeding 26,000 pounds.
  • You transport hazardous materials that require placarding.
  • You operate a farm vehicle with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating exceeding 48,000 pounds.
  • You operate a vehicle designed to transport 15 or more passengers and the driver.
  • You operate a commercial school bus.
  • You transport household goods for pay, regardless of your vehicle’s weight.
  • You own a commercial vehicle that operates in Texas, but you are not a US citizen.

What is a Texas DOT Number or TxDMV Number?

A Texas DOT Number (TxDOT Number) or TxDMV Number is a registration number issued by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) to businesses operating commercial motor vehicles within the state of Texas. It serves as a unique identifier for motor carriers involved in transporting goods or passengers within state boundaries, a process known as intrastate commerce. When registering, you have the option to choose between a one-year or two-year registration period, depending on your business needs.

To secure a Texas DOT Number, your business must meet the required insurance minimums, and your insurance coverage must remain active in the Motor Carrier Credentialing System (MCCS) for as long as your business operates within the state.

Minimum Insurance Requirements

To register for a TxDOT Number, it’s essential to ensure your vehicle is properly insured. This includes meeting the minimum coverage requirements for your vehicle type and keeping your insurance policy active while operating in Texas. As an intrastate motor carrier, you must register and submit evidence of insurance or financial responsibility to establish eligibility for Texas operating authority. Failure to register your insurance with the state can result in fines, penalties, or administrative sanctions, which could lead to the suspension of your certificate, license, or vehicle registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you need both. All motor carriers based in Texas that need TxDOT numbers should also obtain USDOT numbers. Make sure you’re registered as intrastate with the USDOT, because Texas-based motor carriers are the only ones that qualify for TxDOT numbers.

If you don’t get a TxDOT number, you could face some very serious fines. Each violation of the statute that establishes TxDOT numbers carries a penalty of up to $5,000, and the penalty amount can go as high as $30,000. You can avoid these penalties easily with a TxDOT number!

No. TxDOT numbers are for intrastate carriers only. Interstate carriers only need to have a USDOT number to operate in Texas.

Processing for a new application for a TxDOT number takes 24 to 48 business hours for your pre-approval. Once that is granted, your insurance company must submit your application number (VOID NUMBER) to the DMV. Once the DMV receives this information, final approval could take an additional week.

No, a single TxDMV number is sufficient. This number should be displayed on both sides of all your commercial vehicles.

No, TxDMV numbers are non-transferable. They are assigned to specific individuals or entities and cannot be transferred to another person. If there is a change in ownership or structure, a new TxDMV number must be obtained for the new owner or entity.

You can update your business name without obtaining a new TxDMV number as long as there’s no change in ownership and it’s the same business. Just make sure to register the new name with your base state.

You may renew your annual or biennial certificates once they expire. The Texas DMV sends renewal notices out to motor carriers about 60 days before the old registration expires. This process is easy; simply ask us to contact the Texas DMV, and we will help you renew your registration easily! However, 7 and 90 day TxDMV numbers cannot be renewed.
