What is an Operating Authority Letter?

An Operating Authority Letter, also known as certificate of operating authority, includes a company’s name, address, USDOT Number, and MC number. In the event of the loss of said letter, a new copy can be requested and will arrive via mail or email. If your Authority was filed over 3 years ago, we may only be able to provide a screenshot of your authority standing.

Why do I need an  Operating Authority Certificate?

When obtaining an operating authority an MC number) gets issued (granted). After you have your BOC-3 and Insurance on file, the operating authority (MC Number) gets activated. An Operating Authority Letter (Certificate) gets issued with FMCSA at this point and is kept in file. This letter is necessary for booking loads and is one of the last steps when a new carrier is incorporated.
